Swing Dance Debrief and Planning Meeting

Post Date: Monday, March 8th, 2010

The recent Valentine’s Day swing dance was a hit. More than 300 people attended and we raised nearly $1,500 for the Poly Band program. Central Middle School students sold tickets and raised funds for their program as well.

Mrs. Hendrickson is having a parent meeting at 6:30 p.m. March 10 at Central Middle School, 4795 Magnolia Avenue. We will debrief about the dance and will also start the planning process for the next event.

All band and color guard parents are welcome to attend (even if your child is not in the swing band) to offer up ideas and help with the planning.

A Message Anne From Hendrickson

Post Date: Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Hi Swingites, and Poly band and color guard families–

Two weeks to go until our big Valentine’s swing dance — I’m excited, and I hope you are, too!

Students — please don’t wait until the last minute to sell you tickets! (Remember this is a fund raiser for the ENTIRE band and color guard program).

Ask your teachers (even though they are probably sick of kids selling things, but they might actually like this!) community members, etc.

Our music is going to be fantastic but we need a big audience to appreciate it!

My goal is at least 200 paying members. Do your best — I know you can do this!

There will be a parent meeting during our rehearsal again. Meet us at 6:30 p.m. at the room next to the band room at Central Middle School. Parents will be putting together decorations. Also, the problem of the week to solve is that we are not allowed to tape anything to the walls. I saw something fashioned out of PVC (square base, t-shaped arm at the top) that we could fashion ourselves to put around the room and hang things on, but someone else may have a better idea.

Thanks again. Spread the word and take time in class to stand up and talk it up!

Also, swing dance tickets will be for available for purchase today after school. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children. The dance will be held 7-10 p.m. Feb. 13. Ask your friends and family if they want to attend this fun community event.

Please let Beth Campbell know if you plan on sending over some baked goods for the event. We are trying to get an idea of what we will have.

Thanks!

Water, Soda, Baked Goods, Other Donations Needed for the Swing Dance

Post Date: Monday, January 25th, 2010

The Poly Band Swing Dance will take place from 7-10 p.m. on Feb. 13 at the First United Methodist Church, 4845 Brockton Ave. (right behind Central Middle School). Dress is semi-formal, but be sure to wear comfortable shoes if you plan on dancing.

We will also crown the Proud Heritage Prince and Princess of Swing.

This is going to be a fun event and proceeds will go to the Poly band and color guard program, so sell lots of tickets to your family and friends. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children. Swing band kids have tickets and parent volunteers will be selling tickets after school at Poly on Jan. 29 and Feb. 3.

We still need your help to make this event a success. Here is how you can help:

  • • Soda and baked goods: We will sell water, soda and baked goods. Bring water or soda donations on Friday, Jan. 29 and Feb. 5. Lynel Day, Tyler’s mother, will be at Poly after school collecting your contributions. Tyler can also collect donations on any of the other days. Baked goods should be individually wrapped for sale. Bring them to the dance, or contact Beth Campbell to arrange for a pickup.
  • • Security: We need some parents to volunteer to provide security. This will entail occasionally going outside the venue to ensure that the site is safe and secure. To volunteer contact Dan Alexander.
  • • Decorating: We need decorations, light strings, fake plants, etc. to make the room festive. If you have something to donate or want to help decorate contact Kim Lane. Anyone have access to an inexpensive dance floor? Let us know.

Questions? Contact Beth Campbell or Kim Lane

Help Needed for the Upcoming Swing Dance

Post Date: Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Hello to all:

Our marching band and color guard season has ended, but our fund raising efforts continue.

To that end, Anne Hendrickson, Poly band parent and director of Central Middle School’s band program, has been working with some of our dedicated band students. They have formed a swing band and have been meeting and practicing for several weeks.

They will sponsor a swing dance, 7 to 10 p.m. Feb. 13 at the First United Methodist Church, 4845 Brockton Ave. (near Central Middle School).

This is a community event, open to all. Tickets are $5 and will be available for purchase soon.

We need parents to make this event a success.
Volunteers are needed to help with:

  • Decorating the hall before the event (the church is providing some tables and chairs)

  • Publicity
  • Finding a dance instructor (or two)
  • Clean-up after the event.
  • Soliciting donations of deserts from local businesses (cake, pies, cupcakes, etc.)
  • Supplying paper goods
  • Chaperoning and security –the church has requested that we be very diligent about security
  • Photography of attendees — we need someone with a very good camera, tripod and colors printer (we can reimburse for printing expenses). We will sell the photos at the event.
  • Other fund raising ideas for the event.

If you are interested in helping or taking part in the planning process, please contact Beth Campbell.

Thank you and don’t forget to hold the date: Feb. 13.
