General Band Questions

Will band take all of my time?

No! Band is a commitment, but it does not prevent you from having a life.

Are there eligibility requirements?

All students must have a current GPA of 2.0 to participate in band or color guard. This GPA is based on the students most recent report card.

Is High School band difficult?

It will be a challenge, but it is one you can handle. Many students have passed through the band program successfully. The entire program is designed to foster & encourage musical and personal maturity.

Can I play sports and be successful in band?

Spring sports usually have few, if any, conflicts with band. Students who wish to participate in fall sports such as football, cross country, girls tennis, or water polo usually sign up for Concert Band second semester. Currently, we have students participating in many winter & spring sports. No matter what activities you choose to pursue at Poly High School, you must keep an accurate schedule and iron out any conflicts that may occur just as soon as you are aware of them. With a little communication and flexibility, most issues can be worked out.

What about other extra-curricular activities?

We believe strongly in the well-rounded student. Band students are some of the most involved and sought-after students on campus. We have students that are involved in a wide variety of activities. Again, you must keep an accurate schedule and iron out any conflicts that may occur just as soon as you are aware of them.

What is the time commitment outside of the school day?

First, there is Band Camp. Band Camp is held on the Poly High School campus from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday for two weeks prior to the week school starts. Once school begins, rehearsals last until 3:30 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and on Fridays when there is no home footbal game. On Thursdays we have evening rehearsals from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Students are expected to use their regular band class time to do homework on Thursdays. This schedule will last until the second or third week in November. After that, there are no rehearsals at night or after school unless the student is involved in Color Guard or Drumline.

Is it hard to get an "A" in band?

90% of our students receive an "A" or "B" on their semester report cards. We ask that you earn your grade in band. Just like any other class, you will be required to do some work outside of the class. Students do not receive an "A" for showing up to class. They must complete assignments, pass off music, and attend performances. You will receive a Band handbook that will include a detailed grading policy.

What classes do I have to take?

9th graders must be enrolled in Concert Band and Marching / P. E. for the 1st semester. There is no Marching Band / P. E. second semester.

Do I have to take summer school?

Most band students are college bound. These students usually need at least two semesters of summer school. Many choose to take more. This provides for more scheduling flexibility down the road.

Do I have to attend all performances?

YES! Band is a group performance class. Performances cannot be re-created around an individual student. These experiences occur infrequently and are very important to the development of the student. We depend on each other and it is a loss when anyone is missing. Each contribution is unique and irreplaceable. Performance schedules go out in advance of each school year.

Are there practice requirements?

Yes. Students are expected to prepare for their band class just as they would for any other class. Musical skills atrophy when not practiced regularly. We ask that students practice 40 minutes each occurrence.

Do I have to take private lessons?

No, however it is strongly recommended. Students who truly excel in music are usually involved in private lessons.

Does the school provide instruments?

The school helps with some of the larger and more expensive instruments such as Tubas, Baritones, French Horns, Bass Clarinets and percussion instruments. We often run out of instruments in many sections, so some students may have to share.

Do I have to be in Marching Band?

YES! Marching band is part of the total musical experience here at Poly. It is a tool that we use to stress the fundamentals of musical skill, as well as discipline. It also teaches teamwork, pride, short & long-term goal setting, personal management skills, self-confidence, leadership & many other life skills in demand by employers today.

Does the school provide Marching Band Uniforms?

Yes. You however must provide shoes, socks and undergarments. Color Guard members are required to purchase their field show & Winter Guard costumes.

I hear that students run the band program. Is that true?

No! The professional band staff is in charge of every aspect of the Poly Band program. As you can imagine, no program as large and as active as ours can function without the assistance of a strong student leader team. Our student leaders have been selected because of their leadership and communication skills, and receive constant training and instruction. Student leaders assist staff by helping other students develop their musical and marching skills. They are required to lead by example. Student leaders do not administer discipline or assign grades.

How many Sat. events does Marching Band participate in?

We usually participate in 6 or 7 Saturday events. Students will receive a complete schedule around May for the following season.

What about football games?

The band will typically perform at about 5 home games which are usually at King High School. Most games are on Fridays, but some may be on Thursdays or Saturdays. Homecoming is usually on a Saturday. Students will receive a full schedule around May for the following season.

When do Concert Bands perform?

The first performance of our concerts groups is usually the 2nd Thursday in December. During the Spring semester there will be 3 additional concerts and 2 to 3 concert festivals. In addition there is occasionally a Spring Band Tour.

If you want to filter the list by a specific band program simply click the name of that program under the Band Programs link. For example, to see only Marching Band posts click Marching Bands.

What are all those words under keyword filter?

Those are tags and categories. They call it a Tag Cloud. We discuss categories elsewhere but tags are one or two words that describe the content of a post. For example if we post information with an itinerary we would tag it as such. A post about band camp with photos would be tagged with "photos" and "band camp". If you wanted to see only posts with photos, or only those about band camp, click that word. It is easy to find what you need.
